Encyclopaedia Britannica Saves the Trees
Radio 5 Live, October 99

"After a century of publication the Encyclopaedia Britannica has had to abandon paper and go on-line. Half a forest of trees (22 volumes minimum), and a rack of CDs (44 to be precise) not only take up a lot of space, they are always out of date. The only sensible solution is to go on-line! But they have also made it free. This exemplifies the net - bits will find a way. The net is about access right - books are about copyright, because the business models are entirely different. But the technophobes don't like it - tough!! Everyone can now get access instead of the affluent few. For the cost of 22 paper volumes you can now buy a PC and net access for a month"
