Peter Cochrane's Crystal Ball
The latest version of an English futurist
July 3, 1999

"The best way to predict the future is to invent it" - Peter Cochrane

Peter Cochrane likes change. As head of research for British Telecom (BT) Labs, a British think tank and laboratory, Cochrane defines his vision of technology's future.

To figure out tomorrow today, Cochrane and his team of more than 660 people try to live 10 years in the future. Currently the team focuses on artificial life and intelligence, intelligent agents, data mining and visualization, humanized interfaces, and the raw technologies of fixed and mobile networks.

But Cochrane also examines the big picture at BT. Beyond technology, he's also responsible for change in management and operational practices. He's sometimes called the British counterpart to MIT's "big thinker," Nicholas Negroponte.

Cochrane is also an internationally known writer, broadcaster, and educator.
